The barge that is now known as La Tulipe began its life around 1900. It is of iron construction of about 10 mm thickness and we can only assume it began as a working barge in Friesland. It was bought in 1921 by a man called Bjense Kobes for his three sons, Jacob, Jan and Oenes. Therefore he named it The Three Brothers or De Dries Gebroeders
In 1950 it was sold to a Dutch skipper, Jan Scholten who again used the boat on the turf route from Zwartsluis and Hoogeveen. He changed the name from Drie Gebroeders to Linquenda. He operated La Tulipe as a working boat until 1976. It still had the old format of a commercial tjalk with a small 40 hp engine.
We have spent the last ten years refurbishing La Tulipe and travelling from the south of France back to Paris via Strasbourg and then around Belgium and Netherlands |
